satw - pop-star flag by aldohyeah satw - pop-star flag by aldohyeah
My first attempt creating comic based on the history of my country, SatW style ;)

background story:
the Indonesian archipelago had been a Dutch colony for about three and a half centuries, but in 1942 The Netherlands surrendered The Dutch East Indies (that's what Indonesia was called during the Dutch occupation) to Japan..

Japan was hit so hard by the end of the WWII from nuclear attack in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Indonesian youths (which became the Founding Fathers of our nation) saw this as an opportunity, thus declaring Independence of the Indonesian Republic in 17 August 1945

(these are the words of my history teacher, cmiiw ;) ) the whole world recognised our independence, except the Netherlands. So they came back in attempt to reconquer our land.

In one city (Surabaya), the Dutch (or the allied forces) army had the flag of the Netherlands flown on the top of a hotel (Hotel Yamato). This enraged Indonesian people, so they climbed and ripped off the blue part of the Dutch flag, making it resembling the Indonesian flag.

(Dutch flag: red-white-blue)
(Indonesian flag: red-white)

...and a great battle ensued, which ended at 10 November 1945, that is now known as 'Hari Pahlawan' (Day of the Heroes) in Indonesia.

...and the pop-star thing is a reference to pop acts (maybe in 90's and early 2000's; and maybe now, too) that shows off bellies while they're singing :XD:

made to commemorate Indonesia's birthday. :)

nee.. i don't speak dutch.. it's only some of the few words i know :XD:

well.. in my observation, a lot of people here complained that one problem is that this country is quite ill managed, that it becomes the root other huge problems, like corruption, safety of the citizens, and a wide gap between the rich and the poor. and the other one is religious issues..

oh okay XD

Ah yes the corruption, does the government actually punish the people who are corrupted? and then severe punishment?
what would be a threat to the safety of the citizens there?
Easily solved my higher taxes for the rich ;P we have that in the Netherlands too XD your salary above 52000 euro you pay 52% taxes!

this is what i mean by 'ill-managed'.

we complained that the government is being too soft, unlike our first president.

people want the corrupt politicians to be severely punished, some says like they do in china, but others says it´s inhumane, so they decided the punishment is being shamed in public by wearing weird clothes.. but i never really see that :|

convicted corrupt people only get confined in jail for a relatively short time, plus because they're stinking rich, they get all the good facilities that makes them feel no remorse. :( seems like the govt is being really soft on rich people.

because of tackling corruption can't go well because of that softness, our progressive tax system (which means, the richer you are, the higher taxes you pay) and eventually the tax revenues can't be used optimally to help poor people. thus the wide gap stays.

while the govt's soft on rich people, they get really harsh on poor people. i can't actually describe the threat of the safety of the citizens, but citizens are generally feeling unsafe because they don't feel the one who should protect them are doing their job, and potentially could oppress them.

plus they're moving really slowly when it comes to the protection of citizens. like in the case of citizens held hostage by somali pirates, or persecuted minorities, i can only see awfully little care given.

ooooh. now i feel really bad for blabbing out the dark side of my country. lol :XD:

They should make them pay a lot money as a fine.

well fuck, :XD:

So the police won't protect the poor?
but they do protect the rich? sound like america! :O

HAHAHA! :iconxdplz:

I was just curious how Indonesia was since the Dutch government left.

well, what i've been taught, the dutch government made some kind of caste system (where dutchmen were placed in the higher place and we "inlanders" are of the lower caste) and other regulations that caused other disadvantages of our native ppl, so when the dutchmen were gone, it was all gone :D but japan kicks in and he turned out to be fiercer than the dutch :D

of course the netherlands and japan's invasion left some bad memories, but they also left a lot of good stuffs :)and now the netherlands and japan is one of indonesia's closest friends :)

especially as the dutch inspired a lot in our culture, like traditional music, cuisine, arts, and language too.. many of our standard indonesian and dialectal words are derived from dutch words.

hey now i'm curious what the schools in the netherlands taught about the history about the dutch east indies! :D
